Tetrahydrofuran (THF; tetramethylene oxide, diethylene oxide, 1,4-epoxybutane, tetrahydrofurane, oxolane) is a five-membered cyclic ether. This industrial solvent is widely recognized for its unique combination of useful properties, and is also used as a chemical intermediate.

THF has a sterically unhindered oxygen atom that carries two unshared pairs of electrons – a structure which favors the formation of coordination complexes and the solvation of cations. Both properties influence the rate and selectivity of chemical reactions.
